McLaren - C2C/Virgin Trains Dashboard

McLaren
// Railway Dashboard - C2C + Virgin Trains

The goal of this project was to track equipment status on trains and anticipate maintenance needs. For this purpose sensors were applied across multiple types of devices and equipment on carriages and the need for a dashboard were such collected data, analysis and notifications could be displayed became obvious very early on. A very early prototype, done without any UI/UX design input, was already in place and it clearly needed to evolve. As such the Design Lab, where my team was integrated, was involved.

My responsibility was to understand the needs behind it and deliver an interface that responded to such needs, obviously in the most intuitive way possible. My role as such was both to lead the UX/UI resources and to act hands on on the early conceptual and research phases.

The first steps that I defined were the project structure - for alignment with the POs and internal teams involved in the process - as well as a vital research process that included workshops and interviews, with the multiple profiles involved from the client side, and a heuristic analysis of the current platform. This approach allowed us to understand right away the users' needs, objectives, tasks and context of usage. Such knowledge definitely educated the subsequent decisions that had to be taken, design and development wise.
